Life, Love and Literature

I've never been a fan of romance novels, but I have to admit, I have read a couple to see what it's all about.  Passion.  Passion and lots of steamy hot sex.  While I love my passion and steamy hot sex, I just can't get into it.  So enter paranormal romance and urban fantasy.  The stories are much more entertaining and it still possess the passion, but hit or miss on the steamy hot sex.  I can do two out of three!

I know with the recent trends of vampires and werewolves, twilight and true blood, the market has been flooded with these supernatural beings. To be honest I wonder why this genre has been so attractive to readers lately.  Maybe it's due to our need in retreating to a fantasy realm amidst our chaotic global economy? Or maybe Harry Potter just opened up the flood gates that Interview with the Vampire cracked open.  Either way, the stories are quite fetching, that is if you're open minded enough to get into the paranormal genre.  The characters are so damn provocative, strong and romantic, that you're vicariously transported in their world. OK, maybe not everyone feels that way but I certainly do!  Isn't that the whole point in reading for entertainment? To temporarily escape our current world for a much more appealing one? I know this doesn't apply to every genre and I know reading is also for other purposes, but just indulge me in my point.  My point being is if you haven't read into the paranormal genre yet, you should START! I would suggest the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, and of course the Jolie Wilkins and Dulcie O'Neil series by HP Mallory.  Yeah, you're welcome!

Since I'm on the subject, I'd like to give a shout out to the urban fantasy author, HP Mallory, who has written the two said series.  She has injected wonderful characters in her stories, also allowing her readers to partake in contests to become a character in both series.    Your whole name will go down in literary history! Yup, amazing right? I haven't come across an author who does that, and I think it is ingenious.  In fact, she is holding a contest right now for the next book, Wuthering Frights in her next Dulcie O'Neil series.  Here is a link, if you are interested in entering, http://urbanfantasyauthor.blogspot.com/2012/03/become-character-in-my-next-book.html.

With the new zombie trend coming to a head, I'm pretty sure the Paranormal/Urban Fantasy is here to stay, for awhile anyways, until some breakthrough genre gains a following.  We, the populace are... easily swayed.
